If you study above carefully, this is also the base of modern Japanese word for 一つ　hitotsu, 二つ futatsu, みつ　mitsu. the same goes to 一人 hitori, 二人 futari,　三人　sannin (from here it is irregular.) There are a lot of irregularities in Japanese number due to historical evolution of the language. The ancient Japanese read 123 as ひふみ。 A plate number 1122 can read 良い夫婦 ii fuufu which means good marriage.
